Balhannah resident Luke Squiers captured his second career A-main event victory on Saturday night as he claimed the opening round of the Lewiston Haulage Murray Bridge 360LS Sprintcar Championship in bizarre fashion at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway. Despite not leading a lap all night Squiers was declared the winner of the shortened Smedley Tyre Service supported main event after pace setters Keke Falland and Corey Sandow crashed out in spectacular fashion in turn four.

As race leader Falland caught the back of the field he washed slightly up track catching the wall as he raced through turn four and rolled hard and with Sandow following the leader on the high side of the track he was left with nowhere to go and he too crashed hard as he attempted to avoid the flipping #78. With Squiers running a strong third at the time of the lap 12 incident the race was declared due to the time it took to untangle the two wrecked cars.

“We certainly had a bit of luck on our side. We were running a comfortable third for more than half the feature but unfortunately the two leaders came together, handing us the lead. While it’s not exactly the way we would have liked to take the win, we’ll certainly take it.” Added Luke following the feature event.

“There’s no better way to kick off our season than with a win, and it gives us some great momentum heading into the next round”.

Second in the feature event was awarded to Hayden Vickers while local Tailem Bend resident Sam Martin, in only his third start in a Sprintcar, finished third. Jack McCarthy and Tate Cowie were the only other classified finishers while Sandow and Falland completed the starters.

Earlier in the night there was also plenty of action in the heats despite the fact there was only 10 cars in attendance. The opening heat was won by Sandow ahead of Brodie Somerfield and Vickers while heat 2 went to Falland, with Martin and Cowie completing the top three.

Both heats saw major incidents with McCarthy slamming the turn four wall, with the damage forcing him to miss the second heat, while Somerfield totally destroyed his race car with a nasty roll over in turn four in heat 2.

Round 2 of the Lewiston Haulage 360LS Track Championship will be held on Saturday November 14, 2026.
