Kaleb Currie (NZ) raced to a stunning victory in the 50 lap feature of the Australasian Speedcar Championship on Easter Sunday.

After finishing 3rd in the Preliminary Feature on Night 1, Currie would finish the race strongly to claim the $20K winners cheque.

The line-up would see Kaidon Brown (VIC) starting alongside Nick Parker (VIC), and the first stoppage would come 2 laps into the race, with Keenan Fleming (WA) colliding with Mitch Saunderson (ACT), sending Fleming spinning into the fence.

Brown would lead out in front on the restart, with plenty of position swaps occurring further back. Nick Rowe (WA) would move up several spots after starting from sixth, enjoying a good battle with Currie.

The leaders would soon encounter lapped traffic, with Brown getting caught behind the lapped car of Troy Jordan (SA), allowing Caleb Mills (VIC) to sneak into the lead. Brown would quickly fight back, with Parker also right on their tails.

Mills would miscalculate his entry into Turn 4, sending him into a spinning stop on Lap 18.

Casey O’Connell (QLD) would impressively pass two cars at once on the restart, but his move would not count as Beau Doyle (WA) brought the field to a halt, after bouncing and rolling in Turn 1, leaving Brad Mosen (NZ) and Fleming with nowhere to go.

Brown looked to be in control during the middle part of the feature, with the race on between Currie, Parker and Rowe for the remaining podium placings. Jack McCarthy (SA) also looked to be carrying some good car speed, racing up into fifth.

Lapped traffic would again come into play, with Brown and Currie trading several times for the lead, before Currie would finally steer clear. Parker would not let the front runners drift away though, and his persistence would pay off, also managing to pass Brown into second with 6 laps to go.

Currie would skip clear in the closing stages, and looked to have the race all wrapped up before Saunderson would bring on the cautions with 2 laps remaining.

This would see a green, white, chequer finish, with Currie again clear out in front and driving steadily to collect the chequers. Brown would have one more attempt to pass Parker for second and the pair would drag race to the finish, with Parker just managing to hold off Brown. McCarthy would be next in the finishing order after storming from tenth up into fourth, with O’Connell in fifth.

Many thanks goes to the sponsors supporting this year’s 50 Lap event.
