The Formula 500 “King” and “Prince” of the Bridge was decided last Saturday night at the Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway with some great racing from both the Seniors and Junior classes throughout the night. At the completion of the evening the title of “King of the Bridge” returned to South Australia as local racer Corey Jones led the final 10 laps to win ahead of Victorian Chad Bell while Cobden resident Hugo Chivell dominated the Junior Formula 500 event.
In all a total of 15 open drivers signed in for action to contest four heat races and a 20-lap final with multiple National Champion Dylan Beveridge topping the points chart after winning both of his preliminary heat races. Allansford’s Chad Bell and Corey Jones were also successful in taking a heat win.
Therefore, after the heats Beveridge and Bell shared the front row for the final with the major surprise being Simon Reichelt starting from position three ahead of Jones, Mount Gambier’s Anthony Beare and James MacDonald, who was a late nomination.
Following the four wide salute to the fans the field lined up for the start and as the green flag waved the race was quickly stopped before the field got past the flag stand as Victorian Declan Robinson rolled after contact with Harrison Pfitzner.
Once the race got underway it appeared that Chad Bell was on his way to victory as he led the opening 10 laps only to be run down and passed by Corey Jones. From that point it was all Jones, as he raced to a 3.7 second lead as the chequered flag fell. Bell held on to second ahead of Beveridge, who simply didn’t have the speed of the top two in the final. Former Victorian James MacDonald was fourth ahead of Anthony Beare, Dean Cottrell, Victorian Paddy Lewis, Simon Reichelt, Zac Stevens, and Corey Quick.
The Junior “Prince of the Bridge” attracted seven entries, all from Victoria, with Hugo Chivell winning the 20-lap finale setting a new track record, taking more than 9 seconds off the existing 20 lap record. Second place went to Cody Malley, with Cruz Carlin completing the podium.
Mildura’s Declan Bolitho was next ahead of Chase Van Ginneken, Toby Cook and Flynn Annett, who had a busy night as he also in the Junior Sedan events.
Earlier the heat wins were shared between Cody Malley and Hugo Chivell.
