A great line-up of cars turned up for Murray Bridge Speedway’s November 9th race meeting which saw series action continue for both the Street Stocks and Modified Sedans.
Street Stocks returned for Round 3 of their MJS Series with a 30 lap feature, with Carey Weston and Darren Flatman starting off the front row. Weston would edge ahead at the start, with Grant Harris chasing hard in the battle for second with Flatman. The leaders would encounter lapped traffic early on, with Weston making contact with Alex Merrett as he went to pass around the outside. This would bunch up the top three, allowing Harris to move up into second. They would continue to challenge one another, with the trio three wide at one stage, with both Harris and Flatman managing to squeeze past Weston, but causing slight contact and seeing Weston retire to the infield. Harris would gain a little breathing space out in front, with Nick Hill then moving up to challenge Flatman for second. Harris, Flatman and Hill would be the order as the field stopped to change race direction at the halfway point. Kye Richardson would have a great start to pass Wayne Kirley into fourth as the race continued, with Harris still out in the lead. Harris and Flatman would pass each other several times, before contact further back in the field resulted in a race stoppage. Richardson would again have a great restart to pass Hill and move himself up into third, with Kirley also managing to do the same a few laps later. Phil Watson would slow to a stop, bringing on another caution with just six laps remaining. With Harris and Flatman holding down positions one and two, the battle would be on for third between Richardson, Kirley and Hill. Richardson seemed to drift a little high, allowing Kirley to slip pass. While Flatman would give Harris one final challenge, but Harris would hold steady to take out the race, ahead of Flatman and Kirley, with Hill and Richardson completing the Top 5.
Modified Sedans contested twin features as part of Round 2 of the Eastside Bearing Series. The field was reversed for Feature 1, with the top qualifiers for the night starting from the back. This saw Brandon Elphick lead the field for the opening lap, with Nathan Thorne quickly moving up through the field. Rob Uren and Brett Williams would enjoy a good battle during the second half of the race. Thorne however, would open up a handy lead navigating through the lapped traffic to lead home the field over the 15 lap journey ahead of Uren and Williams.
Williams and Thorne would lead the field for Feature 2, and the race was on from the start with several cars jostling for position through the opening turns, seeing Elphick retire from the race early on, and the feature race restarted. Thorne would get the better start this time around, with Williams challenging right behind. Williams was driving hard to close the gap behind himself and Thorne, seeing him drive on the highline and make contact with the fence but unfortunately resulting in a flat tyre and ultimately ending his race a few laps later. After slipping back to fourth at the start, Uren was able to capitalise and move his way up into second. Thorne would hold a commanding lead before succumbing to a mechanical failure and slowing rapidly, before retiring infield, elevating Uren into the lead. Uren would drive smoothly over the final remaining laps to take out the second feature ahead of Wade McCarthy and Jason Demaine.
Nick Hall continued his excellent run in the V6 Sprints, taking out the feature ahead of Renee Pfeiler and Kym Simon, while Daniel Evans (Wingless Sprints) and Dylan Richter (Modlites) were the other feature winners on the night.
Racing at MMS now takes a short break, before the next event – a double header on November 29 and 30, with the first running of the new look 410 Sprintcar Series – the Sprintcars: ‘Supers 8s’. Nominations for the event already include current Australian Champion Lachlan McHugh, Battle of the Bridge winner Brock Hallett and local hard charger Chad Ely. Speedcars are also on the programs for both nights, contesting ‘Roger’s Race’ in honour of the late Roger Munchenberg on Night 1, before the running of their SA Title on Night 2.
